Wardrobe Tips for your Family Photography Session
You've made the decision and found your family photographer! Congratulations! That is a major step. Now you have to figure out what everyone is going to wear. Let's break it down and see if we can make this easier for you.
Let's start with the end in mind.
1) Where will your new family pictures live? Will this photography session be for your primary home or a secondary home? Is your home more formal or casual?
2) Is this a family portrait that gets made every 5-10 years? Or will these be family photos that you want so you can capture your children as they are growing and you don't miss out on those in between times?
3) Will your portraits be made indoors or outdoors?
You will most likely want more formal, dressy attire if any of the following apply: it is for a more formal space, and/or this represents a milestone event such as a special birthday, anniversary, graduation, engagement or marriage.
Formal clothes can include regular dresses and long dresses for the ladies & girls and jackets or suits & ties, or even tuxes for the guys. Be elegant, commemorate the occasion and make it really special! You won't regret the extra effort.
If you plan to display your finished portraits in a family room, less formal space in your home or in a beach or mountain retreat home, or your family is just not the formal type, then more casual clothes may be more appropriate.
Casual clothes can be jeans, but can also include nice slacks. For either, darker colors on the bottoms are better as well as longer pants versus shorts (younger children can be an exception), unless you are at the beach. You also don't have to all wear the same color shirt. In fact, unless you are all wearing white or black shirts, it is better to not try to have the same color shirt because often the colors will not all be exactly the same and that can look odd. Better to pick a theme and incorporate 3-4 coordinating and complementary colors to add interest. Lastly, avoid logos or graphics as these will draw attention away from your faces and the overall cohesiveness of your portrait, and tends to date the photo.
And since you will be using a professional photographer, we can help guide you and give you opinions on your selections.
Whew! That's one more step toward getting your beautiful family portraits hanging in your home!
