Psychological Benefits of Displaying Family Portraits in Your Home
Time and again, I hear in various places in the photographic industry that there are psychological benefits gained when we display portraits in our homes. Obviously, as a family portrait photographer, I can buy into this theory quite easily. However, I was curious to find out if there was any research out there to support this, and lo and behold there is.
So, let's dive a little deeper into the theory that displaying printed family portraits in the home can have a profound impact on children and family dynamics. Research and expert insights actually suggest that family photos do more than just decorate a space—they nurture self-esteem, reinforce family bonds, and provide a comforting sense of belonging.
The Science Behind Family Portraits and Emotional Well-Being
Psychologists and researchers have long studied the impact of visual cues on self-identity and emotional security. Here are some key findings:
- Dr. David Krauss, Psychologist: Krauss has highlighted that family portraits help children feel valued and secure within their family unit. Seeing themselves in photos reinforces their importance within the household.
- Judy Weiser, Psychologist and PhotoTherapist: Weiser explains that family photos act as environmental reassurance, creating a tangible representation of love and connection that fosters emotional stability.
- Emory University Study (Duke et al., 2003): Research shows that children who know detailed stories about their family history tend to have higher self-esteem and resilience. Photos visually reinforce these narratives, making them more powerful.
- Tulane University Study (1975): A study with fourth graders found that interacting with their own photographs led to a 37% increase in self-esteem-related behaviors.
Real-Life Examples of Family Photography’s Impact
Beyond research, real-world examples illustrate the emotional power of family photography:
- Diana Markosian’s Photographic Journey: In her book Father, Markosian used family photography to reconnect with her estranged father, showing how imagery can help process emotions and heal relationships.
- Adali Schell’s "New Paris" Series: This series captures intimate moments of family life in small-town America, highlighting the role of photographs in preserving memories and understanding family connections.
- Dola Posh’s Pandemic Photography: Documenting her postpartum depression during the COVID-19 pandemic, Posh’s self-portraits became a form of emotional expression and healing, demonstrating the therapeutic nature of photography.
Why You Should Display Family Photos
Having tangible family portraits in the home is more than just a design choice—it’s an emotional investment. Here’s why you should consider incorporating them into your space:
- Boosts Children’s Self-Esteem: Seeing themselves in family photos reinforces their sense of importance and belonging.
- Strengthens Family Bonds: Visual reminders of shared moments enhance connection and unity.
- Creates a Sense of Stability: Familiar images provide comfort and security, especially for children.
- Preserves Memories for Generations: Printed portraits serve as lasting mementos that tell your family’s story.
Final Thoughts and Bringing it in Personally
Family portraits are more than snapshots, more than the quick clicks on our cell phones. In fact, family portraits are affirmations of love, identity, and togetherness. As you may have learned elsewhere, either on my website or from me personally, I was adopted as a baby. And as I did some introspection into My Why as a photographer, I discovered that connections are very important to me. As a child, I knew who my adopted family was but being adopted I was left to imagine what my birth family was like. And I think that made the connections for me with my adopted family all the more important and special, because that was who I knew, who cared for me and and who loved me. And as an adult, I can appreciate both my adopted family - my parents who are now deceased, my aunts, uncles, and cousins, as well as my birth mother and half sister who I had the opportunity to meet and connect with.
So remember, whether your portraits are displayed in a living room, hallway, or bedroom, these images provide emotional benefits that go beyond aesthetics. Investing in professional family photography and showcasing those moments in your home can create a lasting impact on your family's well-being.
Isn't it time you scheduled a family portrait session so you can share and enjoy seeing the love in your family on your walls everyday! Your family will too!
